How long have you been in the music industry?
I officially started in the music industry around 1985. I began in New Jersey, but have been working with musicians and projects from all around the world.
How long have you been performing under your present name and what other bands you have played with?
FICTION SYXX has only been around since 2016. Before that, I was in several bands that were known at some point. MESSAGE, PERSIAN RISK (USA), BILOXI, CHASING KARMA, and projects like Liberty N Justice and several other solo projects.
Where did you grow up?
I was born in 6666 in Elizabeth New Jersey. I grew up in New Jersey and moved in 1981 to Mississippi. I would find myself back in New Jersey in 1985, where I began my time in this business.
What era shaped your musical development?
My Mother had a huge record collection from all eras and styles of music. I grabbed a little from all of that. However, most of my influence came from a little bit of 70’s music and a whole lot of 80’s music. However, as I stated earlier, my influences are vast.
Who are your major influences?
My influences are in several categories. Song Writing, Vocals, and Guitar.
Song Writing: I was influenced by bands like Styx, Judas Priest, Uriah Heap, Queensryche, Fates Warning, Stryper, KISS, and TNT. However, I also have been open to many genre’s, when it comes to songwriting. Jim Croce, Bee Gees, Beatles, Led Zepplin, Stevie Wonder, etc.
Vocals: My main vocal influences are Dennis Deyoung, Tommy Shaw, Tony Harnell, Geoff Tate, Rob Halford, DIO, Dean Fasano (RIP), Graham Bonnet, and Joe Lynn Turner. There are way too many to list.
Guitar: Randy Rhoads, Gary Moore, George Lynch, Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker, Yngwie Malmsteen, Akira Takasaki, and Ronni Le Tekro, to name several. Again, there are too many to list.
How old were you when you started following a musician’s path?
I began playing Tenor Saxophone in 7th Grade and picked up a guitar at the age of 17. I started late; however, I found that it was natural for me. I would later find my voice in the late ’90s.
Tell me a funny story that has happened to you like you.
While performing at a place called the Kings Head Pub near Atlanta Georgia with Persian Risk 1994, I became extremely ill. We had to perform that evening to earn our Ramen Noodle wages, so I took some Thera Flu about 20 mins before the performance commenced. That Thera Flu threw me for a loop. I started SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY by U2, which was one of the cover tunes that were mixed into our original set and completely butchered the chording on the beginning. Completely forgot the song. The band stood in disbelief looking glossy-eyed at me as the crowd was trying to figure out what I was doing. I stepped up to the microphone and stated. “That will be my solo for this evening, thank you very much” and I began the song and luckily remembered it this time even in the Thera Flu fog I was in.
Just one more… In the mid-’80s, I would walk into a convenience store to purchase a beer in the middle of the bible belt. The store clerk asked for my ID, looked me up and down to take in the leather, spikes, guyliner, and the amount of Aquanet I was wearing, and once he peered at the birthdate on my ID (6666) he looked at me like the devil himself walked through the door. I told him that I had no plans of bursting him into Hell's fire this evening, grabbed my beer and left.
Where would you like to be in five years?
I would like to have established FICTON SYXX as a well-known act with multiple releases and numerous shows.
