Who are the members of your band and what are their musical backgrounds?
Duane “DT” Jones- Guitar. I started violin, then switched to guitar after being introduced to the music of KISS years ago.
Brian “Bam Bam” Jones- Drums.
Shane Carlson- Bass
Alfred Ramirez- Lead vocals
How long have you been in the music industry?
I have been full time in the music business since December 2003. For a few years before that, I was in the business part-time, trying to get to full-time status.
How long have you been performing under your present name and what other bands you have played with?
This line up of Swirl is going to celebrate 10 years together this fall. It has been an incredible ride with these guys. I look forward to 10 more years with my brothers!
Where did you grow up?
Both Brian and I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska. Our father was in the Air Force. I have always heard of “military brats” and how they “move around a lot”, but that was not the case and our father had 20 years in the service.
What era shaped your musical development?
It was the 80s era of guitar playing. I love guitar solos. That having been said I am also very into more modern bands like Shinedown, Seether, Nickelback, and Five Finger Death Punch which has certainly shaped my playing in recent years with the last 2 Swirl releases. The first being the ‘SWIRL’ EP and most recently the new Swirl song, “The Lift” which was released January 11, 2018.
Who are your major influences?
Jake E Lee, Warren DeMartini, George Lynch, Carlos Cavazo, and Matthias Jabs are just a few of the names that come to mind when I think of the 80s era guitar heroes that shaped my playing. Of course, none of it would happen if it weren`t for Ace Frehley and Paul Stanley.
How old were you when you started following a musician’s path?
Probably midway through senior year of high school when I was on the verge of leaving Alaska after graduation to pursue a football career by going to Stanford University. Then I got bit by the rock n roll bug and I have never looked back!
Tell me a funny story that has happened to you like you.
Most of the interesting stories happen after touring so let`s have that discussion later in 2018 as it looks like Swirl will be on the road again! Let the games begin.
Where would you like to be in five years?
I would love for Swirl to be a household name. A full time writing and recording international band with whatever level of success makes each member happy.
What inspires you to write?
I can be inspired to write on the guitar by almost anything. When I am not on the computer doing the administrative side of the music business for Swirl I am playing guitar for the enjoyment of it or writing songs.
What is your philosophy on life and how does it affect your music?
So many cliches come to mind when I read this question, but I don`t think that is what you are after here. So I will just say life is to be lived! It`s not always going to be great, but it is not always going to be bad. However, I want those extremes most of the time. Stuck in the middle is boring. It`s comfortable and not very challenging. At the end of the day though life is to be enjoyed!
How that affects my music is evident in the stylistic differences between songs like “Message” and “The Lift”. The former using a modern guitar tuning, with overly distorted guitars and booming drums. The latter being just a powerful in its production, but done in standard tuning and more radio-friendly production value. However, both have very positive lyrical content so you will enjoy listening to either extreme in musical style. Life and music are to be enjoyed!
Please add the names of the places you have played and the city they are in.
Swirl has toured so much in the US, Canada, and Japan. Now with the new song “The Lift” coming out and doing so well in countries like Australia and the United Kingdom, on the heels of the success of the music from the ‘SWIRL’ EP I would prefer to answer where haven`t we played. It might make for a shorter list.
Do you have any causes that tug at your heartstrings, or that you support? Abused pets, world peace organization, save the whales, etc…
For Brian and me, our father died of cancer so that is a subject that is very close to my heart.
Do you have any new releases coming out?
We just released the lyric video for “The Lift” on January 10th with the song being made available to the public on January 11th
